Bill Announces Candidacy for Mayor

In 2009, I will be a candidate for Mayor of the Borough of West Chester.

Many who know my record of service — and the positive results I, with others, have achieved for West Chester — have urged me to run for the office. As Mayor, I know I can help in meeting the new challenges of preserving what is best about our town, while moving us forward.

West Chester is at a crossroads. In recent years the Borough has had great success. Now, real estate interests want to overdevelop our town. Unchecked, they will cause the character of West Chester's town center and neighborhoods to suffer. We need to keep on an upward curve, but only with the smart and green growth that will enhance our community. The Mayor, as he only official elected by a vote of all citizens, can and should speak for our broad, shared interests.

It is also the unique job of the Mayor to supervise the administration of the Police Department. Our Department has a much-deserved reputation for excellence. At the same time, we know we are not immune to vandals who shoot out car windows wholesale or to rowdy drunks who disturb the peace, destroy property and even overturn cars. West Chester needs a Mayor who vigorously works with and supports the police. And, it is essential that the Mayor actively listens to and understands the concerns of the community about police protection.

Our challenges are all the more difficult because of the decline in America's economy. We can move forward only if all arms of Borough government, including the Mayor, work together, proactively, in protecting and strengthening the integrity, the diverse character and the livable neighborhoods that make West Chester great.

I hope you agree that the issues I have touched on are important to West Chester. I will do everything possible during next year's campaign to make voters aware, with specifics, of what is at stake and the significance of their choices.

There will be time for more from me later. Meanwhile, your feedback will be met with my attention and your support with my thanks.

Good luck, Bill! I don't know if you remember, but after the CCC race I offered to help out if you ever decided to run for Mayor of West Chester. Now, if you'll have me (as a volunteer), I would be glad to... I just rented an apt across the park from you and move in May 1st... very intrigued with your ideas for re-opening the rail spur from WC to Center City, renovating the station, possibly could get Federal stimulus monies for that... Best,
Mark
